LEWISTON – For about a week, customers at the Corner Variety on Lincoln Street tossed their spare change into a jar on the store counter. The money was earmarked for the Maine Special Olympics. Within days, almost $60 had been collected for disabled people who will compete in Olympic-style games this summer.
Then the jar was gone.
A Corner Variety employee said it appears the collection jar was stolen from the counter while clerks attended to customers. Employees discovered the theft and reported it to police a short time later.
By Wednesday afternoon, the money had not been discovered and no suspects had been found. Police are asking that anyone with information about the theft call them at 784-6421.
