HARRISON – Verdell Gilman Holden Sr., 80, of Harrison, died May 24, at his residence.

He was born in North Bridgton, on Aug. 3, 1924, the son of Alpheus and Iva (Warren) Holden. He was educated in Bridgton schools and graduated from Bridgton Academy in 1942.

He was an avid golfer and caddied as a boy at the Bridgton Highlands. He was later a member for many years. He also was a member of the Crooked River Lodge AF & AM as well as the Kora Shrine. He was co-owner, along with his brothers, of Holden Bros. of Fryeburg, and had for a while been involved with harness racing, having raced his own horses on the fair circuit in Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beulah (Chandler) Holden, of Harrison; one son, Verdell Holden Jr., and his wife, Debra, of North Bridgton; two daughters, Elizabeth Shain-Cerone and her husband, Richard, of Bridgton, and Diane Morrill and her husband, David, of Parsonsfield; two brothers, George Holden of Harrison and Richard Holden of Fryeburg; six grandchildren, Angella Mason of Porter, Paul Sanborn and Christopher Sanborn, both of Waterford, Les Shain of Bridgton, and Matthew Holden and Annie Holden, both of North Bridgton; and two great-grandchildren, Jenel Shain of Bridgton and Noah Mason of Porter.

He was predeceased by brothers, Ernest, Donald and Raymond; and sisters, Bertha, Alice, Mildred, Velma and Doris.
