SOUTH PARIS – Philip “Pip” Cummings, 82, of Bethel, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, at the Veterans Home in South Paris after a long illness.

He was born in Albany, on Jan. 2, 1923, the son of Herman and Mildred Swan Cummings. He was a graduate of Gould Academy and attended the University of Maine prior to serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Ada L. Cotton on Aug. 28, 1949.

He was a member of Jefferson Lodge 100, AF & AM of Bryant Pond, a life-member of Kora Temple Shrine and former member of the Kora Patrol of Lewiston. He was also a member of the American Legion, Jackson Silver Post 68 of Locke Mills.

He was owner and operator of a general store and service station in Locke Mills for several years, prior to moving his family to New Jersey in 1955. While there, he was a foreman for Mack Truck, later becoming an industrial heating engineer, troubleshooting and correcting heating problems in metropolitan New York and New Jersey.

Upon his retirement in 1989, he and his wife returned to Bethel where he enjoyed his hobbies of hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Ada Cotton Cummings; two daughters, Mildred “Macky” Chapman and her husband, Howard, of Bethel, and Debra Swick Brown and her husband, Owen, of Greenwood; one stepson, Milan “Bud” Conner and his wife, Lois, of West Milford, N.J.; one sister, Joyce Cummings Hathaway and her husband, Ellsworth, of West Paris; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Viola Cummings of Caribou, Nancy Cummings of Bethel and Melvina Cummings of Newry; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Theodore, Herman and Larry Cummings; one grandchild, Vincent Chapman; and son-in-law, John Swick.
