BRIDGTON – William Edward Laivo, 87, of Stoneham, died May 25, at the Bridgton Hospital.

He was born in Hingham, Mass., the son of John and Edith (Paijunen) Laivo. His family moved to Pembroke, Mass., when he was young and he spent most of his life there.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the battleship USS New Mexico during the battles of Leyte, Mindoro, Lingayen, Okinawa and also at the initial occupation of Japan.

He was a shipyard worker and also foreman of cranberry bogs. He moved to Maine 35 years ago and enjoyed his family and friends. He liked helping others, gardening, visiting his Finnish relatives and being a member of the Finnish American Heritage Society of Maine.

He is survived by a daughter, Martha “Tooty” Wilson of Lovell; a son, William E. Laivo Jr., and his wife, Janet, of Hingham, Mass.; a grandson, Fred Wilson of Lovell; granddaughter, Faith Parsons of Norway; great-granddaughters, Brittany, Chelsey and MaKayla; and numerous relatives in Finland.

He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey (Wentzell ) Laivo in 1989; and a sister, Edith.
