ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A knife-wielding rapist was wearing a mask and gloves when he abducted a woman and her 11-year-old daughter by hiding in their vehicle at a convenience store, a prosecutor told a judge Friday.

When the woman escaped after being raped by the side of a highway, the assailant rushed her sport utility vehicle and pounded on the window as she and her daughter sped away, Strafford County Attorney Janice Rundles said in Rochester District Court.

Judge Daniel Cappiello set cash bail for Michael A. Shaw, 29, of Rochester, at $500,000 on two counts of kidnapping. He entered no plea.

The pair was abducted about 6 p.m. from an Irving station in Barrington, authorities said. They say Shaw forced the victim to drive to Route 202A in Strafford, made her pull over and raped her outside her vehicle. When another vehicle pulled up, she escaped.

Rundles disclosed some new evidence, including that surveillance cameras caught Shaw pulling into the Irving station and returning to it 21/2 hours later.

Police began watching Shaw on Wednesday and arrested him without incident Thursday afternoon at his home.

Rundles said before the arraignment there was no known relationship between Shaw and the victims.

“This was a completely random event,” Rundles said. “Even on the briefest of errands, you may not necessarily be safe.”
