GREENE – Two drivers were charged in a road rage incident that ended when one car smashed through a garage Wednesday night on Sawyer Road.

Police said a few obscene hand gestures led to two men losing control of their vehicles before the 5:40 p.m. crash.

Charged with driving to endanger were 50-year-old Denis Castonguay of Lewiston and Jason Ayer, 23, of Greene.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy David Rancourt said it was Castonguay’s car that smashed through a garage door and then an outside garage wall at the home of Therese Ray.

Nobody was hurt.

Rancourt said both drivers were heading north on Sawyer Road when one tried to pass the other. That led to an exchange of gestures between the drivers as both men proceeded down Sawyer Road.

Police said Castonguay tried to catch up with the GMC pickup truck driven by Ayer. When Ayer swerved, Castonguay lost control of his Chevrolet, slammed into a parked car and then the garage.

According to Rancourt, Castonguay’s car ripped through the garage door and then through the north wall of the building. The deputy said a seat belt and airbag appeared to have spared Castonguay from injury.

He was charged at the scene. Ayer was found at his nearby home shortly after and was also summoned. Police said Ray, whose garage was destroyed, was not hurt.

“She was outside cutting her lawn when she heard the crash,” Rancourt said.

Ray’s car was also extensively damaged.
