PORTLAND – Richard H. Lee Sr., 85, of 75 State St., formerly of Powsland Street, died Wednesday, June 8, at a Portland nursing home.

He was born in Portland, a son of Patrick and Mary Honan Lee. He was a 1937 graduate of Cheverus High School.

On Sept. 17, 1941, he married the former Barbara Bailey.

During World War II, he served stateside in the U.S. Army with the postal detachment as a mail clerk.

Following the war, he returned to Portland. He worked for the post office for 38 years, retiring in 1979. He then accepted a part-time position at Shaw’s Supermarket at Westgate. He retired from Shaw’s in 1992.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Patrick’s Church where he served as an usher at the 10 a.m. Mass. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the South Portland Municipal Golf Course. He was most proud of the “hole-in-one” that he once shot while playing golf.

He was also an avid cribbage player and often beat most of the people he played. He enjoyed cats and recently lost his pet cat “Rusty.”

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Barbara Lee, of Portland; three daughters, Cynthia A. Fletcher and her husband, Don, of Auburn, Martha J. Croteau and her husband, Leon, of North Berwick, and Sharon E. Noyes and her husband, Charles, of Portland; three sons, Richard H. Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Auburn, James D. and his wife, Susan, of Wilmington, Del., and Patrick J. Lee and his wife, Sharon, of Yarmouth; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Edward and Robert Lee; and two sisters, Marion Mullin and Catherine McDermott.
