CANTON – Lillian “Mabel” Adams, 85, of School Street, Canton, died at her home Wednesday afternoon, June 8, surrounded by her family, with hospice care.

She was born in Fayette, Nov. 27, 1919, a daughter of Frank and Blanche Tobin Lumbert. She was a 1937 graduate of Canton High School, and later attended Pelletier School of Beauty and practiced as a beautician for a short time. She also was employed by Portland Packing Co.

On Oct. 5, 1940, she married Bernard L. Adams Jr. She was a housewife her entire life, and enjoyed cooking for family and friends.

She was a member of Ponemah Rebekah Lodge for more than 50 years and was one of the founding members of the Pine Tree Quilters Guild. She also was instrumental in getting Grammie’s Choice Quilt Group formed in 1979. Quilting was a favorite pastime of hers, as well as being adept at sewing, tatting and cross-stitching. She was also a member of the Canton Historical Society.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bernard L. Adams Jr., of Canton; a daughter, Joan Kneeland and her husband, Richard, of Windham; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Adams of Canton; sister, Barbara Jordan of Farmington; brother, Fred Lumbert and his wife, Kikuko, of Biloxi, Miss.; grandchildren, James Kneeland and his wife, Santanna, of Bridgewater, N.H., Randall Kneeland and his wife, Susan, of Reading, Mass., Prudy Adams of Canton, and Russell Adams and his wife, Kelly, of Canton; great-grandchildren, Casandra and Jacob Kneeland of Bridgewater, N.H., Kathleen and Allison Kneeland of Reading, Mass., and Hayden Adams, Carolyn Campbell and Mason King, all of Canton; and nieces, Joyce Lynn Rose, Barbara Zouboukos, Beverly Lumbert, Diane Thorne and Donna Lumbert.

She was predeceased by a son, Charles, in March 2004.
