OXFORD – Craig Moore knew it would come eventually.
What he didn’t know is that his first career victory at the famed Oxford Plains Speedway would come on a night when the best touring series teams in New England were in attendance.
The Pro All Stars Series made a much-anticipated return to Oxford Saturday night, and Moore picked a good night to shine. At press time, the final segment of the Roys’ All Steak Hamburgers Triple 50s had not been completed. Mike Rowe of Turner held off his hard-charging son, Ben, to win the first segment, while Hebron native Alan Wilson recovered from a spin to claim the second segment. The overall winner will be determined by the lowest cumulative score from all three segments.
Steve Reny, Jerry Harrison, Kim Tripp and David Tripp were also feature winners on a steamy, summer-like evening at the track.
Moore grabbed the lead from Jim Robbins on lap four and held on to win the 30-lap Mini Stock feature. Divisional strongman Bill Childs Sr. came from ninth on the grid to finish second, with Auburn’s Danny Morris third. Rich Sirois and Jim Childs drove from outside the top 10 to complete the top five.
Kim Tripp drove to victory in the first of two 20-lap Strictly Stock features. Keith Stuart grabbed the early lead and stayed there for the first 12 circuits, as Tripp was steadily working his way to the front. The Oxford driver took over the point on lap 13 and hung on to win, with Jeff Moon second and Stuart third. OPS veteran Bobby DiPompo claimed fourth while Don Harvey came from 12th on the grid to round out the top five.
David Tripp took the lead from Jim Davis Jr. on lap six and cruised to victory in the second Strictly Stock feature. Ben Tinker of Gray stayed close to the leaders throughout the event and claimed second, while Poland’s Phil Mitchell III finished third. Davis faded slightly at the finish but salvaged fourth while Skip Tripp completed the top five.
Harrison recorded his first win of the 2005 season with a wire-to-wire performance in the 35-lap Limited Sportsman feature. The Freeport native had his machine dialed in like no other as he dominated the field. OPS veteran Shane Greene of South Paris tried diligently to get by Harrison in the closing laps but settled for second, while Tommy Ricker drove a clean race to claim third. Multi-time winner Kenny Harrison worked his way from deep in the field to finish fourth, while Marty Emerson rounded out the top five.
Reny led every circuit of the 40-lap Lee Auto Mall Late Model Stock feature and held of a determined Travis Adams to take top honors. Adams kept an eye on his rear-view mirror in the closing laps as divisional strongman Chuck Colby of Newcastle closed in. Colby, the hottest driver in LMC competition thus far in 2005 looked rocket-fast yet again but settled for third, while sophomore campaigner Kurt Hewins and Don Wentworth completed the top five.
