JAY – An International Paper employee was injured Monday when he fell from the lower deck of a wood loader to the ground at the Androscoggin Paper Mill’s wood yard, a company spokeswoman said Monday.

The employee, whose name was not released, was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for two broken bones in his right hand, IP spokeswoman Fiona McCaul said early Monday afternoon.

A hospital representative indicated there were no internal injuries, she said.

The employee fell from the loader and momentarily lost consciousness as he was initially being examined by the mill’s health services team, she said.

A medical helicopter transported him to the Lewiston hospital, she said.

The mill notified the employee’s family of the incident and made a courtesy notification to the Occupational Health and Safety Association, McCaul said.

“Safety is the first priority of the Androscoggin Mill,” McCaul said.

A business is only required to notify OSHA if an employee dies on the job or there is a catastrophic event where three or more employees are injured.
