MEXICO – The Southern Maine Soap Box Derby held its 10th anniversary local race on June 4. The youth raced in stock or super stock divisions.

The day started with a parade of racers led by Tommy Thompkins in his Pro Stock number 113 race car. After a day of competition, the two winners were from the River Valley.

Top winners were Kristen Blais in the Stock Division and Miranda Shurtleff in the Super Stock Division. They received $1,000, a trophy sponsored by Eagles, a logo jacket, a plane ride from Coos Canyon Guide Service and a trip to the World Soap Box Championships in Akron, Ohio.

Each youth who raced received a goodie bag, a trophy a soap box logo T-shirt. After the race, Mexico police led a procession of racers to the Mexico Recreation Park for a party of pizza, cake and ice cream. The day ended in a water balloon fight among racers and adults.

The winners were as follows:

Stock Division: eighth place, Desiree Seavey; seventh, Stephanie Cushman; sixth, Kayla Richardson; fifth, Caleb Gauvin; fourth, Tia White; third, Kyky Libby; second, Ayla Libby; first, Kristin Blais.

Super Stock Division: eighth, Logan Bryant; seventh, Rebecca Cushman; sixth, Mikaila Stratham; fifth, Trevor Stratham; fourth, Tyler White; third, April Waite; second, Erin Little; first, Miranda Shurtleff.
