It’s been a sweet summer so far, at least on the base paths. Two of our local boys’ baseball teams are closing their 2005 seasons with state titles.
Saturday, St. Dom’s won its first-ever state baseball title. Brady Blackman pitched a complete-game three-hitter as St. Dom’s eked out a 2-1 triumph over George Stevens Academy at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.
“This is just an unbelievable feeling,” St. Dom’s coach Allen Turgeon told the Sun Journal afterward. And, indeed, it was.
Then, Tuesday, the Oxford Hills Vikings, definite underdogs in their state title contest against Westbrook, won decisively, 9-4.
Oxford Hills was coming off less than 24 hours’ rest, and the team was down to its fourth starter. Westbrook, meanwhile, had five days of rest and sent its ace to the mound.
But Oxford Hills pitcher Chris Jennings dug deep and went the distance, despite a dislocated finger.
The last time a team from Oxford Hills won a state title was 1951.
Congratulations to the coaches, players, parents and schools. You’re the best!
