Molly Ivins column (June 19) expressed my concern about the future programming of Public Broadcasting System when Ken Tomlinson and Patricia Harrison assume control. At this writing, Congress was due to act on a bill that would reduce PBS funding by $100 million.

My favorite and, I believe, fairest news program is the Lehrer News Hour. Now, Nightly Business, Charlie Rose on PBS report both sides of the issues. I like the the McLaughlin Group and Frontline.

The Evangelicals and the right use “liberal” as a pejorative term to discredit Bill Moyers, Dan Rather and others.

My favorite media – Capital Gang and Reliable Sourcer, C-Span I and II, Time, Newsweek, Business Week, Sun Journal, New York Observer and New York Times – have also expressed concern about the future of public broadcasting and the freedom of the press to report the news.

In the May 23 issue of Business Week, there was a special report about the influence of the Evangelicals and the religious right on the government and the media.

I am concerned that more fair and good journalists will be removed from the public square. Al Hunt announced Saturday that the “Capital Gang’s” last program is June 25. I will miss it so very much.
