MONMOUTH – Monmouth crushed Fairfield 19-2 in Game 1 and squeezed out a 9-8 victory in Game 2 to remain undefeated in Zone II American Legion baseball action Saturday.

Josh Jillson pitched a five strong innings in his first start of the season in Game 1, giving up only a pair of hits in the final inning for Monmouth (6-0). Sean Holbrook had a perfect performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs, while Dan Labrie contributed a pair of hits and three RBIs.

John Flynn issued one of Fairfield’s (1-5) two hits with a two-run single in the fifth to spoil the shutout.

With the score tied 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2, Tavis Hasenfus stamped out a base hit before stealing second and advancing to third on an error to set the stage for Mark Wade. Wade cracked a base hit to right field for the walk off win.

The catcher Matt Perry had two hits, including a double and four RBIs for Fairfield in the nightcap.

Gayton, Mechanic Falls split doubleheader

POLAND – Gayton hitters singled and sacrificed their way to three runs in the seventh inning of Game 2 against Mechanic Falls Saturday, edging Post 150 8-7 to salvage a split in the teams’ Zone III American Legion doubleheader.

After blowing a 5-1 lead in Game 2, Luke Potter hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded to plate one run, and Brandon Gervais drove in two more with a sharp single.

Potter got the win in game 2, while Ryan Turgeon converted the save.

In Game 1, Mechanic Falls took advantage of 10 Gayton errors and pounded out a 12-4 win.

Will Griffiths had two hits in that game for Post 150. Potter took the loss in that game for Gayton (2-3), allowing six runs in the first inning on five walks and two singles.

Gerry Goss started both games for Mechanic Falls (2-3) and earned the win in the first game.

Danny Cloutier had four hits on the day for Gayton.

Andy Valley, Bessey Motors split

SOUTH PARIS – Brian Metayer went 3-for-4 in Game 1 to lift Andy Valley to an 8-6 win over Bessey Motors, but Bessey came back to win Game 2 9-3 to earn a split in Zone III American Legion baseball action Saturday.

Andrew Stacey had three hits for Bessey Motors (1-2), including two triples, and scored three times in the loss.

Bessey Motors improved its offensive game in the nightcap, tagging Andy Valley pitching for 12 hits.

Stacey had another two hits for five on the day, including a solo home run. Corey Tielinen notched his first pitching victory and team win of the season for Bessey Motors, allowing no runs and just two hits with one walk, striking out two.

Franklin, Rockland/Knox split

WALDOBORO – Franklin County snagged a 5-0 win in the opener and dropped a 2-1, tension filled Game 2 to Rockland/Knox Post in Zone II American Legion baseball action Saturday.

Franklin County was out-hit in Game 1 by a margin of 8-4, but came up with key runs in the first and sixth innings for the win.

Rockland/Knox Post stranded 14 runners in the shutout.

In reciprocal fashion, Franklin County bested Rockland/Knox Post in the hit department in Game 2. But Rockland/Knox Post managed two runs in the first inning and won, 2-1.
