LEWISTON – The Lewiston Adult Education program is looking to increase its diploma requirements, forcing new students to take an additional math class and ensuring they have taken at least one writing course as part of their English credits.

Adult Education officials will ask the School Committee to OK the changes Monday night. If approved, the new requirements would apply to students who enter the program after July 1.

The Adult Education Program allows teenagers and adults to earn a high school diploma by taking classes during the day or at night. Students can also earn credits through correspondence courses, by showing work and military experience and by studying at home. Currently, Adult Education students need 19 credits to get a diploma. Officials want to increase that to 20.

Under the proposal, students would have to obtain three credits in math instead of two. They would still be required to earn four English credits, but at least one would have to be from a writing course.
