RUMFORD – A Mexico man arrested by Rumford police Saturday on a charge of rape remained at Oxford County Jail in Paris on Thursday, a jail official said.

Jessie M. Cross, 23, is charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A felony.

On Monday, Cross appeared before a Rumford District Court judge, who set bail at $5,000 cash or $25,000 surety. Cross is to be arraigned on Sept. 20 in Rumford District Court, the jail official said.

Rumford Detective Lt. Stacy Carter said late Thursday afternoon that he had scheduled Cross to be arraigned in the court on Aug. 2, but wasn’t aware of the date change.

Carter said that Rumford police received a report Saturday morning that a 19-year-old Rumford woman had been sexually assaulted at 5:30 a.m. in an apartment on Oxford Avenue in Rumford.

Patrolmen David Bean and Charles Beale responded initially, followed by Carter.

The woman “and a witness were able to identify the suspect as Jessie Cross,” Carter said, and the woman “knew Cross.”

Carter said the investigation is continuing.
