BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – University of Vermont men’s basketball star Taylor Coppenrath will play for the Boston Celtics in a weeklong summer league in Las Vegas, UVM and the Celtics announced Friday.
The 6-foot-9 forward, three-time America East player of the year, finished his UVM career this year, leading the team to three straight America East championships and its first three trips to the NCAA men’s basketball championships.
Coppenrath is among seven rookies on the summer league team. Boston’s three 2005 draft choices, first-round pick Gerald Green and second-round selections Ryan Gomes of Providence and Orien Greene of Louisiana-Lafayette are on the 12-member squad. Coppenrath was not selected in that draft.
The Celtics squad will play six games in Las Vegas, beginning Thursday, July 7 at 10 p.m. against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Coppenrath, who hails from tiny West Barnet, Vt., is Vermont’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,442 points, second in scoring average at 21.4 points per game and fourth in rebounds with 852.
