School Funding

LONDONDERRY, N.H. (AP) – Londonderry officials are leading the fight against a new formula for distributing state aid to schools.

Since the law was adopted, Londonderry officials have recruited 13 communities and amassed a war chest of $120,000 to sue the state.

Londonderry and other southern tier towns lose out in this latest school funding plan, which sends less money to wealthier communities and more to towns with lower median incomes and smaller tax bases.

The towns fighting this plan are very different from the poor, rural towns that sued the state a decade ago. But their goal is the same: a full-scale overhaul of the way New Hampshire pays for public education.

Superintendent Nate Greenberg says some schools may need more help from the state but that shouldn’t come at the expense of schools that are successful.

Bradley Grilled

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) – U.S. Rep. Jeb Bradley took some heat at a weekend appearance in Durham as he faced about 40 people concerned about the war in Iraq.

Speakers at the town hall meeting said too many troops are dying overseas. One woman complained about a lack of support for veterans programs.

Bradley predicted it will take at least two years before American troops can leave Iraq. He said the military must train Iraqi forces until they are able to take control of the country.

The Republican disagreed that veterans are not getting the support they need, saying veterans are getting the best health care.
