SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) – The pilot of an ultralight aircraft died Sunday after crashing into Worden’s Pond in South Kingstown, authorities said.

Richard M. Leger, 59, of Narragansett, was piloting a flying inflatable boat when it crashed after taking off from a state boat ramp, according to a statement from the South Kingstown Police Department.

Leger was pulled from the wreckage in the water and taken to South County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Environmental Police Lt. Michael Longtin, of the state Department of Environmental Management, said the investigation is ongoing and there were no immediate leads as to the cause of the crash.

He said a pilot’s license is not required to fly the ultralight craft, which is composed of three parts: an inflatable boat, a motor structure and a wing structure. It was unclear if Leger had a license.
