AUBURN – “Judaism 101: A (Re)Introduction to Judaism,” is being offered this summer by Temple Shalom Synagogue Adult Education.

The course will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning July 12, and will last for seven weeks. It will be taught by Rabbi Hillel Katzir, spiritual leader of Temple Shalom, and will meet at the synagogue, 74 Bradman St., Auburn.

“This class is open to everyone,” Katzir said. “We always get a wonderful mix of people for this class: Christians curious about the Jewish origins of their faith, Jews who are looking to reconnect with their Jewish education, and a few who might be considering conversion to Judaism. I always enjoy teaching this class, and I am looking forward to this summer’s session.”

There is a registration fee for nonmembers of Temple Shalom. For more information, or to register for the course, contact Katzir at 786-4201.

Basement fire damages Pierce St. building

LEWISTON – Fire damaged the basement of an apartment building at 78 Pierce St. Monday evening, spreading smoke into the apartments above.

No one was hurt. The building has at least four apartments.

The fire may have started near a cellar work space in the front of the building, Fire Chief Michel Lajoie said at the scene.

A bench was severely burned, as was a nearby window casing. An investigator was called to determine the cause.

“At this point we have no idea whatsoever,” Lajoie said.
