AUBURN – Barricades went up on High Street on Tuesday night after a woman drove over a torn-up section, causing both air bags inside her car to deploy.

Nobody was hurt in the 9:45 p.m. crash, but the windshield of the Buick Century was cracked and police began investigating.

The driver’s name was not immediately available. Shortly before 10 p.m., she was driving toward Court Street when she struck a patch of dirt stretching across the road, police said.

The section of High Street had recently been torn up as the Water District made repairs, police said. It was believed a brief rainstorm Tuesday night might have worn away some of the dirt from the hole, causing the long hole to deepen.

Police called the Water District and workers were sent to the scene to make repairs. It was unknown later Tuesday how long those repairs are expected to take.
