JAY – A girl was injured Tuesday when she fell off her bicycle on Route 133 after colliding with another bicyclist, Jay police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier said Tuesday.
A tractor-trailer rig was traveling north on the road toward Wilton and saw a couple of bicyclists heading in the same direction on the road, Fournier said.
Truck driver Gary Fitch, 49, of Jay honked his air horn and Sandra Balsamo, 30, who just moved to Jay from Japan, attempted to move to the side of the road where a family member was bicycling, Fournier said.
Balsamo bumped the other bike and fell off her own bike, and the bike continued on without her and struck the rear wheels of the truck’s trailer, Fournier said.
Balsamo, who received head injuries and abrasions, was taken by a NorthStar ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, he said. She was treated and released, a hospital clinical coordinator said Tuesday night.
The bicycle, which Fournier estimated was valued at $500 to $600, was damaged, Fournier said. The tractor-trailer, owned by E.L. Vining & Son, was hauling road tar from a Livermore site. It was not damaged, Fournier said.
