DAMARISCOTTA – Hazel G. Allen, 91, of Newcastle, died on the evening of July 1, at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta, after a lengthy illness.

Born July 21, 1913, she was the daughter of Kenneth Tolman and Jeannette (Gowdy) Corey. She grew up in the Massachusetts towns of Pittsfield, Worcester and Springfield, and went to local schools. She attended Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College) in New London, N.H., and graduated from Fairchild Office School in Worcester.

She worked as a secretary for the Heald Machine Co., as a young woman.

In 1936, she married Ralph H. Allen of Worcester, and lived in East Longmeadow, Mass., before coming to Maine in 1949. The family lived in Auburn for three years, coming to Newcastle in 1952.

Through various years of her life, she enjoyed skating, tennis and dancing; also the crafts of caning and stenciling, and the art of flower arranging, which brought her to becoming a member and vice-president of the Old Bristol Garden Club. She was a sales lady for Emmons Jewelry, and was an avid reader and bridge player.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra J. Allen of Newcastle; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Giles Allen of Jefferson; brother, Roger E. Corey and his wife, Dorothy, of Westwood, Mass.; and sister-in-law, Isabel Allen of California; four grandchildren, Michael Allen of Warren, Mark Allen of Jefferson, Lisa Peabody and her husband, Barry, of Jefferson, and Jeffrey Allen and his wife, Susan, of Waldoboro; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Donald W. Corey of New York, and Bruce Corey and wife, Pam, of Wilbraham, Mass.; and her childhood friend, Barbara “Bobbi” Lyman of West Suffield, Conn.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, in 1990; and son, Stephen Allen, in 2002.
