LEWISTON – An Auburn man was killed early this morning after his motorcycle slammed into a utility pole on the Lewiston side of the South Bridge.
Police said the rider, believed to be in his 40s, failed to negotiate a curve at the end of the bridge and struck the pole at about 12:15 a.m.
Investigators were not releasing the victim’s name as the investigation got under way.
Police said the cyclist was driving from Auburn into Lewiston across the bridge on his 2005 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy when he lost control of the bike.
Witnesses told police the rider struck the pole and then fell to the sidewalk in front of the Bates Mill Factory Outlet. The victim was not wearing a helmet.
When police and paramedics arrived, the victim was unconscious but a pulse was detected, investigators said. The man died on his way to the hospital or shortly after arriving there, police said.
In a grim irony, a son of the victim came upon the scene shortly after the wreck. That man called his mother who also went to the scene. Family members went to the hospital while police began to take measurements and photographs at the crash site.
Investigators were speaking with at least one possible witness, a man who had been driving in the area.
It was the first motorcycle fatality in Lewiston this year.
