FRYEBURG – The town’s elementary school is expected to be closed for several weeks after an early morning fire ripped through a section of the building.
A truck driver passing the Charles A. Snow school about 2:30 a.m. reported he saw smoke coming from the building at Portland and Pine streets, a fire official said.
Fire crews responded, but by the time the blaze was subdued, damage was estimated at more than $20,000, according to Fryeburg firefighter Rex Wiley. No one was hurt.
More than 200 students, kindergarten through fifth grade, attend classes at the school. It was unknown if the building is regularly in use in the summer.
School officials could not be reached on Friday.
It was initially believed electrical wiring may have started the blaze. However, inspectors from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office were continuing the investigation Friday night.
