MECHANIC FALLS – Camilla M. Griffiths, 85, of Mechanic Falls, died Saturday, July 9, at Central Maine Medical Center from injuries suffered in a fall.

She was born March 5, 1920, in Cranston, R.I., the daughter of Henry and Petra Redstone. She graduated from Cranston High School in 1937 and St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., in 1941. During World War II, she did graduate work in biology at the University of Iowa and earned a master’s degree in biology from Brown University in Providence, R.I.

In 1945, she married Army Maj. Robert “Bob” E. Griffiths, then helped him raise three sons in Wisconsin and Bethesda, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. She taught biology at a public high school and a Catholic girls school, both in Bethesda.

In 1991, they retired to Charlottesville, Va., and lived at University Village, a retirement community. Bob died in 1999, and she moved to Mechanic Falls in May 2004 to live with her son, Dave, and his family.

She was active in the Minot United Methodist Church and worked as a volunteer with young readers in Sue Damm’s second grade class at Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls.

She had a special affection for dogs, cats and children, and always took time to approach them with a warm smile, a loving touch and sincere interest. She will be remembered in Mechanic Falls for her independent spirit and was often seen walking slowly but steadily around town on various errands.

She is survived by three sons, Dave and his wife, Cathy Griffiths, of Mechanic Falls, Dann Griffiths of Lusaka, Zambia, and his former wife, Francoise, of Tunisia, and Mark Griffiths of Charlottesville, Va., and his former wife, Sue, of Ashland, Va.; her brother, Clinton Redstone and wife, Betty, of Warwick, R.I.; and six grandchildren, William and Richard Griffiths of Mechanic Falls, Joe Griffiths of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jessica Griffiths of Ashland, Va., and Camilla and Philippe Griffiths of Tunisia.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Griffiths, of Charlottesville; and her brother, Norman Redstone of Warwick, R.I.
