BETHEL – Monica Wood, Maine author, will be the guest of Western Mountains Senior College at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, at Garland Chapel, West Parish Congregational Church.

Wood will review her third novel, “Any Bitter Thing,” which earned the number seven spot for May on the “Top 10 Picks” from Booksense, a coalition of more than 1,100 independent bookstores across the country.

As with her other works, Wood drew in part from her experiences while growing up in Mexico, Maine. The novel is set in a fictional western Maine town and tells the story of a young woman raised by her beloved uncle who is a priest. Kirkus Reviews calls the novel “a quiet tale of epic repercussions.”

Wood’s other books include the novels “My Only Story” and “Secret Language.” “Ernie’s Ark,” a book of linked stories, is included on the Maine Library’s list of 20 books designated for entry in the “Main Voices, One Nation” national reading-list project.

Her short stories have been read on Public Radio International and published in magazines and anthologies. She was also awarded a Pushcart Prize. She is the author of two books for writers, “The Pocket Muse” and “Description.” “Any Bitter Thing,” is available at area bookstores. After her presentation, she will be available to autograph books.

The event is free to college members, are invited to bring a quest. However, pre-registration is recommended due to limited seating. For more information or to register, call Jackie Cressey at 824-0508.
