PERU – Richard C. “Dick” Porter, 75, of Peru, died late Saturday evening, July 9, at his home in Peru.

He was born, Jan. 1, 1930, in Rumford, a son of Claude A. and Verna (Brown) Porter. He attended Dixfield schools, graduating from Dixfield High School in 1950.

On Aug. 28, 1951, he married Marlene Luce in West Peru. They made their home in Dixfield for a short time, before moving to their current home in 1959 on the Dickvale Road.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division from 1951 to 1953. He worked at Oxford Paper Co., in Rumford for 40 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member and past master of the King Hiram Masonic Lodge, the Rumford American Legion, Peru Snowmobile Club and past Peru Boy Scout Troop 513 Master.

He enjoyed hunting, vegetable gardening, snowmobiling, traveling with his wife and friends, Blackie and Anna Hebert, but especially camping in Millinocket and fishing the West Branch of the Penobscot River, which he did for the past 48 years. In his idle time, which was few and far between, he loved doing carpentry work around his home.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of nearly 54 years; two sons, Rick Porter of Auburn, and Randy Porter and his wife, Sharon, of Peru; a daughter, Heidi Thibeault and her husband, Peter, of Peru; a sister, Linda Suarez of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jessica Porter and her fianc, Seth Chessie, of Dixfield, Christopher Thibeault and his girlfriend, Paula Wentzell, of Mexico, and Melissa Porter of Peru; 22 nieces and nephews; and three special family dogs, Corky, Roxy and Belle.
