FALMOUTH – Martha Lord Bass, 81, of Falmouth, died Tuesday July 5, at her home in Falmouth.

She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Augusta, the daughter of Fred R. and Madeleine S. (Lord) Lord. She was a graduate of Walnut Hill School, Bradford Junior College and Mt. Holyoke College.

She worked for the government during World War II decoding encrypted messages. She also worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., and was a reporter for the Kennebec Journal, prior to her marriage in 1948 to Robert N. “Bunny” Bass. They resided in Wilton for many years.

She was active in several service organizations in Wilton, Boothbay Harbor and Portland throughout her lifetime.

She is survived by her husband, Bunny; their five children, all of whom live in Maine; her brother, George M. Lord of Falmouth; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
