RUMFORD – Chris Decker was chosen as Mountain Valley High School’s new assistant principal at Monday’s board meeting, creating a whole new administrative team at the high school.

Decker, of Turner, was chosen from five applicants. He has been assistant principal at Mountain Valley Middle School since 1999. He replaces Steve Saunders, who has served as assistant principal for two years. Saunders left the position to retire.

On June 30, MVHS Principal Bruce Lindberg left after serving for two years, to become headmaster of Lee Academy in eastern Maine. He was replaced by Jay resident Matthew Gilbert, a former principal at Livermore Falls Middle School and former assistant principal at MVHS.

Also resigning for the purpose of retirement was longtime music teacher Terry Eldridge.

In other matters on Monday, the board approved spending up to $175,000 from the district’s technology reserve account to buy laptop computers for the high school. When the computers are in place in the fall, all students from grades 7-12 will have access to laptops.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said all the funds may not have to be used contingent upon whether additional technology grant money comes through.

Also on Monday, the board:

• Approved a slight change in the weight of votes made by SAD 43 representatives serving on the Region 9 School of Applied Technology Cooperative Board. The change in weighted votes was caused by Peru’s merging with SAD 21 and the drop in population. Hodgkin said SAD 43 representatives still maintain control of the Region 9 board.

• Approved Rumford board member Frank DiConzo’s application to serve on the state Board of Education.

• Appointed Alan Tacheny and Rita Aromaa as head teachers at Meroby Elementary School.

• Met in a closed session to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken.
