LEWISTON – An 11-year-old girl was struck by a car early Thursday night while crossing Spruce Street near Kennedy Park.

Police said Jamisha Batelho of Lewiston ran into the street between parked vehicles when she was struck by a car being driven toward Park Street.

Kassim Weli, 24, of Lewiston told police he was unable to stop in time when the girl darted in front of his car at about 8 p.m.

Batelho was thrown onto the hood of the car before falling to the street with a gash around her eye and a possible head injury, police said. A drink she had been carrying from a nearby store spilled in the roadway.

The girl was under observation at Central Maine Medical Center at about 10 p.m., according to police Sgt. Tom Avery, an emergency medical technician who was among the first to the scene.

Police said it did not appear Batelho’s injuries were life-threatening, but she was expected to be admitted to the hospital.

Avery said the girl did not respond to her name when police and others reached her. After several minutes, however, she began to cry and move her arms and legs.

Police closed down Spruce Street between Bates and Park streets for a short time while fire and rescue crews responded. Once Batelho was taken to the hospital, police remained on Spruce Street breaking up arguments and small skirmishes.

No one was hurt, and no arrests were made.
