LIVERMORE – Vivian H. Hinkley, 98, a resident of Crash Road, Livermore, died peacefully Saturday, July 16, at her home.

She was born April 20, 1907, in Coplin Plantation, the daughter of Bartlett and Lizzie (Dill) Hammond. She graduated from Strong High School as valedictorian in 1925 and from Farmington Normal School in 1927.

In 1959, she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine Farmington.

On June 20, 1932, she married Charles Everett Hinkley of North Livermore in Strong. He died Dec. 28, 1991.

She taught school in Freeman Township, Strong and Livermore, teaching over 1,000 children in a 28-year teaching career, 22 of them in Livermore.

She was a member of the North Livermore Baptist Church, the National Education Association, the Maine Teachers Association, and the Retired Teachers Association, and was a lifetime member of the Strong Historical Society. She was a former member of the Norland Grange, the Ladies Union, the Farm Bureau, and a 4-H Club Leader.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, knitting, making Oriental rugs and doing crossword puzzles. She also did leather tooling, ceramics, oil painting and watercolors.

For many years she and her husband traveled, visiting every state but Hawaii. They also traveled to many of the Canadian provinces, the Virgin Islands and Mexico.

She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Whipple and her husband, David, of Topsham; a son, Lawrence H. Hinkley and his wife, Evelyn, of Livermore; four grandchildren, Laura Hinkley of Cleveland, Ohio; Everett Hinkley and wife, Sandy, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Janet Opatrny and husband, David, of Mentor, Ohio; Vivian Anderson and husband, Larry, of Anchorage, Alaska; six great-grandchildren, Andrew Cisan of Chesterland, Ohio; David, Megan and Sarah Opatrny of Mentor, Ohio; Michael and Amy Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister-in-law, Mildred Wright of Livermore Falls; a brother-in-law, Ernest Hinkley of North Livermore; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Vance E. Hammond, and two sisters, Thelma M. Kimball and Maxine King.

The family extends much appreciation for the comfort and care given by Faye Ann Laverdiere to Vivian throughout her later life.
