LEWISTON – Adele Janina Rokicka Aliano, 82, formerly of Poland, died late Saturday evening, July 16, at d’Youville Pavilion where she had been a resident for the past four years.

She was born in a large Polish community in Lynn, Mass., on March 27, 1923, a daughter of Joseph and Juzefa (Piorun) Rokicka, and was educated in Massachusetts schools. She moved to Maine in 1974 and remained a resident of the Poland community thereafter.

On May 2, 1943 during World War II, at 20 years of age, she married her childhood sweetheart, Salvatore J. Aliano, while he was home on leave. He passed away June 7, 2004.

As they began raising their three children, she did her part to support the war effort by going to work in the factories. During the war and afterwards, she also worked as a school administrator and sales clerk in Lynn and Boston, Mass. She was one of the first full-time working moms of her generation. Her last employment, from which she retired, was as an office clerk with International Paper Co.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, and among her favorite enjoyments were the company of pet dogs, birds and fish. She also loved doing jigsaw puzzles.

She leaves a daughter, Theresa Winer and husband, Phil, of Corning, N.Y.; two sons, Robert Aliano and wife, Kathy, of Englewood, Colo., and Jim Aliano of Kent, Wash.; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Jennie Ketchen and husband, Lou, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and a brother, Ed Rokicki and wife, Helen, of Lynn, Mass.
