JAY – Police are investigating a report of two bombs exploding in a granite quarry in north Jay.
Jay police received information Wednesday morning from someone who heard an explosion and saw the result of the blast in a quarry off Woodman Hill Road, Jay Police Chief Larry White Sr. said Monday.
“The devices had been detonated and appeared to have been very powerful,” White said. “They could have been deadly up to 40 feet from the point of detonation.”
Jay police contacted an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, John Morris, to assist in the investigation, White said. An investigator from the state Fire Marshal’s Office also responded.
After a joint investigation by all three departments, some suspects were interviewed, White said.
The investigation continues and suspects may soon be charged, he said.
Criminal use of explosives is both a federal offense and a state felony offense, White said.
Assisting in the investigation from the Jay Police Department are special investigator Roderick Small and Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier.
