NORWAY – A broad-based community group is working with the Norway Memorial Library to bring books to children who might not normally visit the library in the summer.
The Dragon Rider Reader Project will bring books to six housing complexes in Norway and Oxford once a week for eight weeks. Volunteers will provide book-based entertainment, such as storytelling, puppetry, songs and dance, as well as reading aloud. Children and their parents will also have the opportunity to borrow books, much as they would at the library.
“Many children in the area do not read during the summer and do not have access to a library,” said project coordinator Anne Campbell. “We wanted to provide a fun way for them to access books and to get them excited about reading.”
The dragon theme for the project ties it to the Maine libraries’ summer reading program theme, “Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds.”
Oxford Hills Technical School has donated a bus for the project, and dozens of books have been donated by community members. In addition, the project is made possible by a grant from Maine Reads.
