MERRIMACK, N.H. (AP) – If you have a street sign from Merrimack hanging in your den, police are giving you a chance to return it, no questions asked.
About 40 signs have been stolen since winter and police are offering an amnesty period through Aug. 10 to try to get them back.
“Just come in, bring them to us, and we’re not going to ask how or where you got them,” said officer Walter Kwiecinski.
Not surprisingly, police say most of the missing signs carry people’s names. They figure the signs might have been snatched because they hold some sort of significance or sentimental value to the snatcher.
The town ran a similar program several years ago and got quite a few stolen signs back.
“If we get a handful of them back, good,” Kwiecinski said. “If we get more, it will save the town money.”
