Talent show

GARDINER – The Maine Academy of Country Music will hold a statewide talent show competition starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Boys and Girls Club located at 16 Pray St. Competition will be held for juniors, ages up to 18, and seniors, age 18 and over.

Admission will be $8 for academy members and $10 for the public. To register to compete call 377-3597.

Consolidation

AUGUSTA – Trinity Commandery 7 and Maine Commandery 1 will consolidate and be know as Maine-Trinity 1 on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The ceremony will be held at the Masonic Hall, Water Street. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the consolidation program at 7. All Masons are invited.

Beach conclave

WELLS – Coastal residents and visitors, volunteer monitors and anyone interested in Maine’s beaches are invited to attend the Maine Beaches Conference on Aug. 17 at York County Community College to learn about the past, present and future of Maine’s beaches and to experience the coast first-hand during afternoon field trips.

Morning presentations will offer a range of perspectives on the economic value of beaches, trends along the coast and ecosystem changes and will address the history of beach development. Afternoon field trips will be based at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Cabins available

CONWAY, N.H. – Rental of the Black Mountain, Doublehead and Radeke Cabins on the White Mountain National Forest will soon be available through the National Recreation Reservation Service. The Saco Ranger District will continue to take reservations for the cabins for arrival dates through Feb. 28, 2006.

To reserve a cabin for an arrival date after March 1, 2006, contact the service at 1-877-444-6777; TTY 1-877-833-6777; or Internet at ReserveUSA.com.

The service will be able to take reservations by Aug. 1, and will take bookings 360 days in advance for arrival dates on or after March 1, 2006.

New brochures

ORONO – University of Maine Cooperative Extension has added two new publications to its offerings: “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005” and “Finding Your Way to a Healthier You.”

The dietary guidelines provide authoritative advice, for people age 2 and up, about how good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. The new edition places stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and increasing physical activity.

The health brochure summarizes the basic guidelines for eating a healthy diet and being physically active.

Linscott picnic

LIBERTY – The 10th annual (and possibly the last) Linscott family picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, at Lake St. George State Park, Route 3.

It is a bring-your-own picnic lunch affair. The park opens at 9 a.m. (there is an admission charge), and the picnic will start whenever the first guest arrives. There will be Linscott memorabilia, photo albums, newsletter and several Linscott family history manuscripts on hand.
