ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) – Charges against two Rhode Island men accused of trespassing at Martha Stewart’s Mount Desert Island estate will be dismissed in exchange for agreeing to donate $500 to island libraries in Stewart’s name, according to their attorney.
Joseph A. Moretti, 38, of Cranston, R.I., and David J. Cimalore, 45, of Westerly, R.I., were charged with trespassing last July. They are alleged to have gotten a tour of Stewart’s Seal Harbor mansion by lying to an employee about having permission to see the property.
Their attorney, Neal Pratt, said his clients accepted the offer extended by Hancock County District Attorney Michael Povich after weighing it against the legal and travel costs of going to trial.
“They were very pleased and they felt vindicated that the charges were going to be dismissed,” Pratt said.
After the incident, Pratt said he and his clients were contacted by reporters from national television and magazine outlets looking for interviews about the case, all of which were turned down.
“The last thing we wanted to do was inflame anybody,” he said.
