The citizens of Maine should thank Sens. Collins and Snowe for the eventual closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station. Their moderate stance on many recent issues and failure to support the administration and the Republican Party undoubtedly contributed to the ill-conceived decision to realign the mission of Brunswick, and will probably lead to its eventual closure.

Our senators’ public relations announcements vowing changes in the outcome are merely maneuvers to cover their responsibilities and are bids for re-election.

Little wonder that the state of Maine often comes out second-best in the political arena, where party lines need to be clear and decisive.
