REVERE, Mass. (AP) – State environmental officials said they hoped to reopen Revere Beach to swimmers on Tuesday.
The beach was closed Friday after a major sewer pipe burst on Western Avenue in Lynn, spilling millions of gallons of raw sewage.
Executive Office of Environmental Affairs spokesman Joe O’Keefe said preliminary results from water samples taken late Sunday indicated that bacteria levels along the beach were well below unhealthy levels.
“It appears likely that we will be able to reopen swimming at Revere Beach tomorrow,” O’Keefe said Monday.
O’Keefe said officials would have updated test results late Monday night and would make a final decision early Tuesday morning.
Beaches at Lynn and Nahant were also closed after the sewer line break, but reopened on Monday.
