TOPSHAM – James A. Miller Sr., 69, died July 26, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born in Mexico, July 30, 1935, a son of Oliva and Mary Miller. He graduated from Mexico High School, where he was active in several sports, mainly football and track. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono and his master’s degree from the University of Southern Maine.

He married Marguerite “Peg” Miller on Nov. 29, 1958, in Rumford, and they shared 46 years together.

He was employed with the Brunswick school system, first as a teacher and later as a guidance counselor at Brunswick High School. He coached swimming, basketball and football at the Brunswick Junior High and Brunswick High School. He retired in 1992 because of ill health.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church and a longtime member of the church choir. He enjoyed family, sports and music. As a self-taught guitarist, he loved sing-a-longs with family and friends. Upon retirement, he discovered golf and enjoyed bowling at Yankee Lanes. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, compassion and charm.

Survivors include his wife, Peg Miller, of Topsham; two sons, James of Topsham, and Scott and his wife, Sharon, of Saco; two daughters, Lynn Drehobl and her husband, David, of Bowdoinham, and Amy Miller of Philadelphia; two brothers, Robert Miller and his wife, Frances, of Brewer, and Roger Miller and his wife, Marcelle, of Rumford; a sister, Marilyn Turbide and her husband, Maurice, of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
