AUBURN – Charles W. Sylvester, 93, of 1128 Riverside Drive, Auburn, died Wednesday, July 27, at Clover Manor Nursing Home.

Born in Durham on Nov. 13, 1911, he was the son of Lyndon and Edith Gould Sylvester. He attended grade school at Bliss School in Durham and Webster School in Auburn, and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1930.

He served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II, and in the Pacific Theater of Operations for 30 months.

He worked in farming and forestry, at the shipyards before the war and as a board sawyer in sawmills, and was the last person to saw timbers to repair Upper Dam with water mill at Upper Dam in the Rangeley Lake area.

He worked on construction and carpentry for H.E. Callahan, and retired from Gammon Cabinet Co.

Charles and his wife, Louise, loved to visit their son at Clayton Lake.

In his earlier years, he was an avid baseball player, having played for several local teams.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, cutting firewood, landscaping and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Louise Bowie, of Auburn, whom he married Nov. 17, 1946; his son, William Sylvester of Clayton Lake and his companion, Jeannine Pelletier; his sisters, Ruth and her husband, George Benjamin, of Auburn, and Velma Becker of Auburn.
