NEW YORK (AP) – Consolidated Edison reported a record high for electricity use Wednesday as New Yorkers cranked up air conditioners to battle temperatures that soared well into the 90s.
The power company, which serves the city and Westchester County, said its customers hit a demand of 13,059 megawatts at 5 p.m., eclipsing the previous record of 12,551, set Tuesday.
The temperature reached 96 degrees in Central Park and 100 degrees at LaGuardia Airport by 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Con Ed said four of the top 10 power consumption loads in its history have been reached this year.
Con Ed first reached the 10,000-megawatt mark in 1988. It hit 11,000 in 1997 and 12,000 in 2001. The 13,059 megawatts used Wednesday would be enough to simultaneously power about 13 million homes.
