PORTLAND – Alice Elizabeth Hall, 80, of St. Catherine’s Residence on Walton Street, died Wednesday, July 27, at her home after a fulfilled life.

She was born in Fort Fairfield, on Oct. 8, 1924, a daughter of Herbert and Merinda Russell Schwartz, and attended Fort Fairfield schools, graduating from Fort Fairfield High School in 1942.

She married Cloud A. Hall on Dec. 10, 1945, in Fort Fairfield, and moved to South Portland in 1946, where they lived at Broadview Park until 1950. In 1950, they moved to 19 Wyndham St., Portland, where the couple lived until Cloud’s death in 1990. Since 1990, she has lived at St. Catherine’s Residence on Walton Street.

In addition to raising her family, she worked outside of the home from 1966 until her retirement in 1986 at Martin’s Shop ‘N Save in Westbrook.

Following her retirement, she and Cloud traveled across the U.S. and Canada. The couple also loved spending time at their camp on Barker Pond in Sebago – in the summer for family gatherings and especially in the winter, when they were avid snowmobilers.

After Cloud’s death, she continued to travel with her friend, Rita O’Brien, especially on bus trips. In her later years, she learned how to cross-stitch, and became an accomplished stitcher. She also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.

She will be remembered as a wonderful mother, and as a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her children, son, Stephen H. Hall and Dixie M. Haley of Damariscotta, daughter, Merinda Beck and her husband, Jaritt, of Kelsey, Calif., and son Joseph C. Hall and his wife, Anne, of Limington; three sisters, Sister Mary Denis Schwartz, RSM of Portland, Phyllis Hutchins and her husband, Leonard, of Chapman, and Sally Adams and her husband, Thomas, of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Thomas Schwartz of Homosassa, Fla., and Robert Schwartz and his wife, Jean, of Fort Fairfield; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Herbert Schwartz Jr., and Russell Schwartz; and two sisters-in-law, Gladys Schwartz and Rachel Schwartz.
