MOXIE GORE (AP) – A woman suffered serious injuries and her male companion was killed Friday afternoon when they were swept over Moxie Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Maine.
Officials identified the injured woman as Carol Gordon, 34, of Oakland. Gordon was taken to a Skowhegan hospital with neck and back injuries after going over the falls, Lt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service said.
The male victim’s name was not being released until his family could be notified, Dorian said.
Dorian says the two appeared to have been swimming in Moxie Stream when they were pulled by the current over the falls. The area is west of Moosehead Lake in northern Maine.
About 50 rescuers from the warden service, local fire companies and rafting companies in the area helped with the rescue and recovery.
It was made difficult by the vertical cliffs and heavy foliage in the area. The man’s body was airlifted out by helicopter, Dorian said.
Moxie Falls is a scenic waterfall near a stretch of the Kennebec River that’s popular with whitewater rafters. Moxie Falls drops 92 feet, making it one of the state’s steepest waterfalls.
