After reading the July 26 “Looking back” article for 25 years ago, 1980, I had flashbacks of dealing with some of those businesses. A person could walk into many of those places of business and be immediately greeted by name with inquiries about health and family. The clerks were interested not only in business, but also in the customer personally.

Although the Sun Journal article listed only about 25 private enterprises, there were many more. Those businesses were involved in the community and interested in their employees. They also sponsored local sports clubs and other activities.

Kind of sad to see it gone.
