Season meeting

RUMFORD – Parents and their prospective Mountain Valley High School athletes are invited to attend preseason meetings at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4. The evening will begin with a general session in Puiia Gym, followed by small-group sessions with individual coaches.

The purpose is to outline expectations and requirements for participation in fall sports at Mountain Valley High School and offer the opportunity to meet coaches and ask questions. Coaches will also hand out paperwork required and explain team rules.

Athletes will need to return all of their paperwork to the school office and have an up-to-date physical on file with the school before the first tryouts on Monday, Aug. 15. For clerical reasons, this should be done by Friday, Aug. 12. Any questions may be answered by calling the school at 364-4547. The school fax number is 364-3436.

Expo workshop

RUMFORD – A pre-show workshop for participants in the River Valley Expo will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, in Room 302 of Mountain Valley High School. RSVP for the workshop by calling 369-0396.

Kids’ week

RUMFORD – The Rumford United Methodist Church will sponsor a week of activities for children in kindergarten through grade six from Monday through Friday, Aug. 8 to 12.

The program is titled “Club Can-Do” and will feature music, Bible stories, crafts, recreation, mission stories and a daily snack. Children will be asked to bring something each day to be donated to a mission project.

The club will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the church on Linnell Street and will end with a supper and program at 5:30 p.m. Friday for the children and their families. Following the dinner at 6:15 p.m. a program will be held, prizes will be awarded and children will sing songs that were learned during the week.

Quit smoking

RUMFORD – River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition is offering four one-hour sessions on ways to help quit smoking. Sessions will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 9, 16 and 23, at Rumford Hospital in Conference Room A. The last session will be determined by attendees.
