N.H. governor announces grant of $500K for youth
BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – Gov. John Lynch says $500,000 will be spent on programs to help prepare city youths to get jobs.
Lynch said Jobs for New Hampshire Graduates at Berlin High School and the New Hampshire Community Technical College in Berlin will share the grant from the Workforce Opportunity Council.
The high school program will get almost $214,000 for dropout prevention efforts. The technical college will get almost $287,000 for similar programs.
The programs help youths explore career interests and learn job-seeking skills.
Colo. man admits skirting privacy
HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) – A Colorado man accused of taking pictures under a woman’s skirt in North Hampton pleaded guilty Wednesday and will spend 20 days in jail.
Florentino Avila, 47, of North Glenn, Colo., was arraigned in Hampton District Court on simple assault and violation of privacy charges. Prosecutors said he is due in court in Colorado on similar charges.
Avila was sentenced to one year in jail with all but 20 days suspended.
Police said they identified him through store surveillance pictures. The incident happened July 5 at an Irving Mainway service station. A man was seen taking several pictures under a woman’s skirt. The woman confronted him and he fled.
Prosecutors said police in Portsmouth and Newington are investigating similar incidents.
New Hampshire man dies in crash
ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A 45-year-old Barrington man has died in a traffic accident on Route 16.
State police said David Tsopas was driving a tractor-trailer south Tuesday evening when the truck crossed into the breakdown lane, striking a guardrail. The truck continued south, left the road and crashed into several trees and a rock wall.
Tsopas was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said the cause of death is still under investigation.
He was alone in the truck.
