MEXICO – Ten area heavy metal bands are to invade Mexico on Saturday, Aug. 6, for the third annual Metalfest at the Mexico Recreation Park off Route 17.

Co-organizer Nick Graham of Mexico said Wednesday afternoon that the bands will each perform a 30-minute set, with 15-minute breaks in between acts.

The bands include Hatred Alive, Abominable, Bloodline Severed, Nobis, Dead Season, Disaster Complex, Amaranthus, Waging War, Shadow Facts and Nira May.

The cost of the chemical-free event from 1 to 8 p.m. and beyond is $3.

“If this goes good, we’ll try to get a national band next year,” Graham said.

He said the Metalfest is not to be confused with the Moontide Music Festival, which is scheduled at the park for Sunday, Aug. 21.

“The music may not be to everybody’s taste, but it’s what the younger people are interested in,” Graham said of Metalfest.

“The music being played ranges from melodic emo music to straight-out death metal. The mellowest band playing is heavier than AC/DC. This is not a rock show,” he added.

Additionally, Graham, the drummer for Hatred Alive, is holding a “Fastest Feet” contest for drummers interested in winning a five-piece Ludwig drum set, donated by Nate Lacombe, owner of Music Maniac in Lewiston.

Sponsors of the Metalfest include River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, Music Maniac, Coca Cola and STC Online Radio of Houlton.
