GRAY (AP) – Three teenagers are free on bail after being charged with manslaughter in the death of a Westbrook man who was beaten in a fight outside a Westbrook bar last month.
A Cumberland County grand jury last week indicted Wade DePalma, 19, of Westbrook; Nicholas Lavigne, 19, also of Westbrook; and Alexander Layug, 18, of Portland. They are charged with recklessly or negligently causing the death of 33-year-old Douglas Edward Wilcox.
The fight started after verbal taunting back and forth over the course of the evening on July 3 turned into a physical assault outside a tavern, Maine State Police Detective Sgt. Walter Grzyb said at a press conference at the Maine State Police barracks.
Wilcox was treated at a hospital following the fight and died four days later. The probe was hindered because Wilcox refused to cooperate with the police investigation into the assault.
Wilcox did not want to press charges or go the hospital at the time of the fight but went to Maine Medical Center when police insisted.
His jaw, eye socket and cheekbone were broken and his skull was fractured, family members have said.
However, he left the hospital July 5 against doctors’ recommendations and collapsed the next day, according to his family. He returned to the hospital and died on July 7.
Wilcox and the three men may have been familiar with each other but did not know each other well, Grzyb said. Even thought several days passed between the fight and Wilcox’ death, police said the beating was the cause of the death.
“Somebody has to be held accountable for that,” Grzyb said.
Lavigne and DePalma were once competitive wrestlers for Westbrook High School, and Layug played football and ran track for Portland High School.
The three were arrested Friday and taken to the Cumberland County Jail. They were later released on $10,000 bail each, jail officials said.
